ARCHIVES ARE ALIVE
Welcome to La Boîte Rouge VIF’s archive site! We invite you to explore two paths we’ve travelled. OUR HISTORY tells the story of our organization through a selection of archives from our early projects. OUR JOURNEY shows how we are developing our own archival system, so we can access what we’ve created together with our partners — the traces of our stories, of what has been shared — now and for future generations. We share our process in the hope of inspiring other Indigenous organizations to reclaim their own archives.
Our history
Since our beginnings in 1991 with the DCM Group, La Boîte Rouge VIF has documented each project through carefully preserved archives, including MiniDV tapes. These archives hold memories that speak to the deep relationships built with Indigenous communities, and to the collaborative, lifelong journey of cultural transmission initiated by Élisabeth Kaine.
Our Archival Journey
For over 25 years, La BRV has been collecting and preserving thousands of hours of audiovisual archives that give voice and image to the knowledge and stories of the 11 Indigenous nations of Quebec. These unique archives allow for the discovery and transmission of the heritage of the First Peoples, in their own words and gestures.
